How We Select Candidates and Organizations to Support

Helping you make the greatest impact with your political investments

Savvy investors know that not all business opportunities are created equal. Political investments are no different.

Blue Impact looks for candidates and organizations that can make the most of your donations. We don't recommend the top targeted races in the country because you can already figure that out by yourself. Instead of asking "Who will win?" we ask "Who can maximize your investment the most to improve their chances of winning?"

Blue Impact will recommend taking risks that others may not. We look for opportunities to tip the balance in favor of Democratic candidates or ideals in locations that may be overlooked or under-supported.

For example, Democrats need to pick up 24 seats in 2018 in order to retake majority control of the House of Representatives. All 435 House seats are up for re-election every two years, but political parties focus only on a handful of targeted seats in order to best utilize their resources. We take that approach one step further by looking for pickup opportunities that might have fallen through the cracks.

We also look for important races that you might not have heard about otherwise, like a battle for Secretary of State or a State Supreme Court race that could change the next redistricting process and have an impact for a decade or more. Each of our targeted states include a set of objectives with strategies that can be multi-cycle (such as breaking a Republican supermajority in the state legislature). The right outcomes in 2018 could be key to defeating Donald Trump in 2020. Creating a fair redistricting process affects the makeup of Congress and state legislatures through 2030.

Blue Impact has hired political experts with local expertise to direct our recommendations in each state. Our experts might not be famous talking heads that you'd find on CNN or Fox News, but they have decades of experience in their respective states and will be around long after 2018. They have access to non-public information about local and statewide organizations that helps them determine the best opportunities for success. Some of our experts are listed on our About Us page. Some are not (they tend to be a publicity-shy bunch). To get in touch with one of our experts, email us at and we will make an introduction. Our experts are passionate about what they do and are committed to the idea that a better-informed public is the best way to protect our Democracy.

Our recommendations will change over time, from cycle to cycle, depending on the evolving needs of campaigns and organizations. Some campaigns may need a more robust door-to-door operation in 2018, while in 2020 that priority may change to fully funding a digital communications effort.

In the end, we're making our own judgment call on where to prioritize political investing. We will have our hits and misses. We will learn and improve return with a clear-eyed evaluation after each election.
